Comparing Consumer Documents

Hello 8th Grade Students,

This week we learned how to compare consumer documents in order to make smart purchases. We also learned how to skim and scan documents to gain meaning from these complex documents. Write a detailed paragraph that specifies the benefits and risks of skimming these documents. List two examples of how skimming is helpful and two examples of how it can be harmful.

  1. Well skimming is just reading through and getting an idea but scanning is going through the writing and getting the general information what the meaning of it is. Benefits of skimming are, are that there is a writing but everything in it is not important so you go through and look what the meaning is.

  2. skimming is helpful because it helps you get the main idea of a document without wasting 15 minutes reading it word by word, but it is also risky or dangerous because if you skim through a legal agreement like a contract which you really shouldn't do you will end up signing something that you did not agree to in a way. An example of skimming being helpful is when you are given a long 10 page paper to read and understand that concept, all you would need to do to just get the main idea about it is to skim it. One example of skimming being harmful is when you are given a 50 page contract with very small writing you're thinking to yourself this is so long im not going to read this, you end up skimming it and when you skim you read the main things and headlines. so if you miss one part by skimming and that par of the contract would say something about you need to drive someone around whenever they want, you end up stuck doing whatever the contract states.

  3. We learned how to skin and scan documents this week. Skimming is just reading it fast and getting an idea of the document, but scanning is when you actually are looking for something specific like a word or a definition and it's when you get the get the general information. These are both helpful for us.

  4. skimming a document is helpful because you will not have to read the full document and instead can get a brief description of it. Skimming can also be helpful to understand a document and to also read its fine print will help you see any hidden parts of a documents. skimming can be harmful in the way of missing valuable information such as the fine print or any other parts explaining the terms you are agreeing to or have to use not to damage equipment.

  5. Skimming a document is helpful because you can get a brief description of a document instead of reading all of it.It is also helpful because if you dont want to know details about the document, you can just skim through it.Some reasons why skimming is not helpful is because you may skip some important information about the document. Also, you can misunderstand some of the information you read when you are skimming.

  6. Skiming a document takes a lot less time then reading the whole document because skimming is when you get a brief summary of what the whole article is explaining. A reason why skimming isnt good is because you may skim through an important part of an article, allowing you to miss information that is nessecary to know. Another important reason skimming isnt always good is because if you skim through a document to quickly you may misunderstand the paragraph.

  7. When you skim a document it can be helpful and harmful, because when you skim you get an idea of what the document is about and if you skim through it you can see something that caught your attention and that you liked. But, it can also be harmful because you can miss an important part that says the disadvantages of the product you want to buy and also when you skim you miss a lot of the main information the document gives.

  8. When you are given a contract, you must take your time and skan what you are agreeing to. When skimming a document, you just get a general idea with what the document includes like what topic. Skimming is harmful because, you can be tricked into something you are not willing to do and/or agree with.

  9. When you are skimming a document you might find yourself being interested in, it is merely a short cut to the general information given that might pop out the most. This could be harmful, however, because of its "general" idea- opposing being more specific and scanning through all the information without a doubt that you've missed anything you needed to know.

  10. To be honest, nobody sits down and reads the entire Apple user agreement when they update iTunes. We skim the document and try to grasp a certain meaning from the document. Two ways that skimming can help is a) we gain a general meaning of the document b) you can exclude unnecessary details and focus on the main ones. A bad part to skimming is a) you can miss important texts b) you can misunderstand a part because you left out some important details

  11. Skimming just means to get a general idea of what the document or agreement says, because i highly doubt that anyone really sits down and reads the double sided 5 page agreements or documents, so they just skin through it. But skimming has a lot of advantages and harms as well.
    An advantage of skimming is:
1)IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME
    2) YOU CAN GET AN IDEA OF WHAT THE AGREEMENT OR DOCUMENT IS SAYING.
But at the same time it may be harmful to you as well bacuse:
    1) IT CAN MAKE YOU AGREE ON THINGS THAT YOU DONT WANT TO AGREE ON
    2) IT CAN MAKE YOU MISS A LOT OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT WAS ON THE AGREEMENT OR DOCUMENT.

  12. Skimming and scanning are very important reading techniques. Skimming is to looking through document quickly and to gather a general idea. When you skim, you read through an article three to four times faster than reading it word for word. Scanning refers to reading through material to find specific information. Skimming can be helpful because first, its going to save you much more time. And second, your still getting a general idea of the document. The risky side to skimming is that first, you may miss something very important. And, second you may not fully understand it by just looking over it quickly.

  13. Skimming and scanning are two different ways to read a document. Skimming is basically getting a grasp of the whole document in a general idea. On the other hand, scanning can help u understand the document more, and helps you find specific points and information. Skimming does save your time, but if you want to know everything about the document, you would have to be careful and choose scanning instead.

  14. Skimming helps the reader understand the general idea of a document. People usually skim when they are limited by the amount of time and need to quickly grasp the main idea. The problem with skimming is that if you are required to give an in depth analysis of the document, you might leave out some key details.
People scan a document when they are looking for a specific piece of information. For example, a person may scan the newspaper for an article on the sports page or a specific job in the business section.

  15. Skimming and scanning are two totally different concepts. Skimming is when a reader reads and looks over the main parts and gets a general idea of the text, and scanning is when the reader reads the entire text and understands it with details too. Skimming is helpful when for example you read an article about a sports game, but it is harmful when, for example, you skim an article about how to install or setup a device.

  16. Smimming is an easy way to say you read it or finished it. But later you will regret it, with skimming you miss details that later on can be harmful or later will effect you with money or other types of problems. In the kinda bright side you finish quicker and get the main idea of what is going on without details.
